Unrolling surfaces is an interesting way to help you visualize and reassemble models. Second to that, you can use the ability to help you to start understanding how UV mapping is controlled. We’ll be getting into this topic further in the next month.

For now, I recommend making a little character from boxes, as seen on Toy a Day and playing around with flattening out the model, printing it out on a piece of paper, cutting out the pieces and trying to reassemble them. It is really important to work with your own two hands to help you understand how 3D space works sometimes.
